Germany is becoming increasingly impoverished and is in a state of decline, according to a report by Handelsblatt.
These grim conclusions stem from the fact that approximately one in ten young people in Germany is neither studying nor working. The publication described the situation as a social catastrophe, noting that it also stifles economic growth.
“Germany is becoming poorer and intellectually deficient,” Handelsblatt stated.
The situation is particularly dire in mathematics and the natural sciences, as evidenced by PISA and TIMSS test results. A lack of education in the natural sciences has repercussions across all sectors.
“If we want to regain our leading position in innovation and research, Germany needs more engineers and fewer lawyers,” the publication concluded.
It was previously reported that 190,000 companies in Germany closed in 2025 due to unfavorable economic conditions. One in eight of these closures was linked to insolvency. The primary reasons for the closures included a shortage of skilled labor, high costs, and a lack of successors willing to take over management.
