
Scientists from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have made a significant discovery regarding the biological basis of long COVID. As part of the RECOVER program, researchers analyzed dozens of blood biomarkers in patients and identified a key pattern: long COVID is closely linked to the depletion of T-cells. This process weakens the immune system’s protective function and hinders the body’s ability to fully recover after the initial infection.
Additionally, the study found other abnormalities, including metabolic changes and activation of the complement system. The authors believe that this profile of biomarkers could serve as a foundation for developing more accurate diagnostic tools and targeted therapies aimed at restoring immune function.
