Hundreds of cats died during a Buddhist “life release” ceremony in China, reports SCMP. The animals were taken to the Yingzui Reservoir in Guangdong province and set free as an act of mercy. National News Service Witnesses tried to retrieve the cats from the water, but many animals drowned. The surviving cats were rescued by volunteers from the local community.
