Nvidia has finalized its acquisition of Hugging Face for approximately $12.9 billion. This deal marks one of Nvidia’s largest acquisitions and signals a strategic shift: the chipmaker aims to strengthen its presence in the open-source AI ecosystem.
Hugging Face serves as a central hub where developers share and collaborate on open-source AI models, datasets, and tools. By owning the platform, Nvidia expects to better leverage its computing power to support these models and potentially sell excess cloud capacity to Hugging Face’s user base. This move comes as OpenAI and Anthropic develop their own AI chips, which could reduce reliance on Nvidia’s hardware.
However, some industry observers caution that Nvidia’s dominance might compromise Hugging Face’s neutrality, as the platform currently supports models from various competitors, including AMD and Intel.
