
Today, NASA is poised to launch the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket. Named after the agency’s first chief of astronomy, this observatory aims to revolutionize our understanding of the cosmos. Its key advantage is an unprecedented field of view — at least 100 times wider than Hubble’s. This allows Roman to scan vast stretches of sky far more rapidly, enabling one of the largest cosmic surveys in history. The mission promises to shed light on some of science’s biggest mysteries: mapping the distribution of dark matter, tracing the expansion of the Universe and the role of dark energy, conducting a census of exoplanets (potentially discovering tens of thousands), and studying black holes and galaxy evolution. An innovative coronagraph on board will enable direct imaging of exoplanets by blocking out the glare of their host stars. After launch, the telescope will travel to the Sun-Earth Lagrange point L2 (about 1.5 million km from Earth), where it will spend approximately five years on its primary science mission.
