Former UEFA President Michel Platini has called on FIFA President Gianni Infantino to resign.
FIFA had previously announced plans to create a company called FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE)—intended to consolidate FIFA’s commercial and tournament-organizing activities—and invited private investors to acquire stakes in it. The proposal met with a negative reaction from UEFA, with reports of potential World Cup boycott threats. FIFA later released a statement from Infantino acknowledging the controversy surrounding the project and confirming that the proposal would not go ahead.
“Economic matters are one thing. I believe Infantino has failed because, while he is supposed to be the guardian of the rules of the game, he has not adhered to them. Commercial breaks aren’t in the regulations, a 30-minute halftime break in the final isn’t in the regulations, and the idea of scrapping the red card is the worst of all. He is the guardian of the rules, yet he doesn’t follow them; he must step down,” RMC Sport quoted Platini as saying.
Several European national associations had previously announced they were withdrawing their support for Infantino.
Infantino has headed FIFA since 2016 and previously announced his intention to seek re-election in 2027. The FIFA presidential election is scheduled to take place next spring in Morocco.
