
On August 30, 2026, NASA successfully launched the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Named after NASA’s first chief astronomer (often called the “Mother of Hubble”), this observatory is poised to revolutionize our understanding of the cosmos.
The telescope will embark on a multi-year mission to search for thousands of exoplanets, study the nature of dark matter (the invisible “glue” holding galaxies together) and dark energy (the force driving the universe’s accelerated expansion), and map the large-scale structure of the universe. Its field of view is more than 100 times wider than that of the Hubble Space Telescope, allowing it to scan vast regions of space much faster.
After launch, the telescope began a journey to the second Lagrange point (L2) in the Sun-Earth system — about 1.5 million kilometers from Earth, where it will settle into its observation orbit. The travel and instrument calibration phase will take approximately three months, with the main scientific program and the release of the first images expected in early 2027.
