OpenAI CEO Sam Altman warned in an interview with the Washington Examiner of the potential catastrophic consequences of China winning the global artificial intelligence race. He stated that if the U.S. were to lose this contest, the world could be “destroyed.”
Altman acknowledged public skepticism regarding the rapid development of AI but described this as a “good trait” that allows society to maintain critical thinking. At the same time, he noted that AI developers frequently discuss the associated risks.
“Many people working in AI have said there is a 25 percent chance we will destroy the world, and we will race ahead to do it because, otherwise, the bad guys will do it first,”
Altman told the publication.
Altman’s remarks come amidst intensifying competition between the U.S. and China in AI development, as well as growing pushback from the public and regulators.
