FIFA may cover the legal expenses of its president, Gianni Infantino, should UEFA file a lawsuit against him, reports The Athletic.
According to the source, FIFA is prepared to cover Infantino’s litigation costs because he was acting on behalf of the organization in his capacity as president.
On August 27, UEFA announced it had lost confidence in Infantino and called for a change in world football leadership. The organization also stated that if the official were to run for another term, it would work with other confederations to field an alternative candidate. Later, Sky News reported that UEFA intends to push for criminal proceedings against Infantino in Switzerland.
Previously, FIFA had planned to raise $4.2 billion by selling a roughly 20 percent stake in a new entity, FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE)—to which the organization’s media and commercial rights, including those for the World Cup, were to be transferred—to private investors. Following a threat from UEFA to boycott FIFA tournaments, Infantino announced the abandonment of the plan to sell a portion of the commercial rights.
