PayPal has laid off approximately 600 employees in India, representing about 10% of the company’s local workforce. The cuts are part of a global restructuring aimed at reducing costs, Moneycontrol reports.
The layoffs affected employees in technology, engineering, operations, payment systems, and finance. According to informed sources, staff at PayPal offices in Chennai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad lost their jobs.
PayPal employed over 6,000 people in India, so the announced cuts amount to roughly 10% of the local staff.
The layoffs began with calls to affected employees on August 31, according to Moneycontrol. One employee told the publication that access to corporate systems was cut off immediately after the call notifying them of the dismissal.
Affected employees were offered outplacement assistance and informed that they would receive one month’s salary as severance pay, although some stated they were still awaiting details regarding final settlements.
The cuts in India are part of PayPal’s large-scale restructuring. In May, company management announced plans to reduce its global workforce by 20% over the next two to three years, aiming to save at least $1.5 billion annually during that period.
By the end of 2025, PayPal had approximately 23,800 employees worldwide, meaning that around 4,760 people could lose their jobs under the broader reduction plan.
PayPal’s Indian division has become a vital part of the company’s global technology and payment infrastructure. The company opened its first development center in Chennai in 2008, while its offices in Bengaluru and Hyderabad support operations in areas such as machine learning, artificial intelligence, fraud prevention, risk management, and data science.
The job cuts come as global technology and fintech companies increasingly focus on cost control and boosting efficiency through AI. Moneycontrol notes that the layoffs at PayPal’s Indian unit follow recent waves of job cuts or restructuring plans at other major international technology and service companies operating in the country.
