Alpine driver Pierre Gasly won qualifying for the Formula 1 round in Italy.
In Q3, the Frenchman set a lap time of 1 minute and 21.786 seconds. Mercedes driver George Russell finished second, 0.060 seconds behind Gasly. McLaren driver Oscar Piastri finished third, 0.180 seconds behind the leader.
An Alpine driver won qualifying for the first time in Formula 1 history. Pierre Gasly became the first Frenchman to take pole position in 29 years: the last Frenchman to win qualifying was Jean Alesi at the 1997 Italian Grand Prix.
Drivers’ standings leader and Mercedes driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli finished seventh, but will start the race from the back row due to a penalty for changing his power unit.
