At the age of 80, Arthur Plummer, a British man, became confined to a wheelchair after being diagnosed with polymyalgia rheumatica—an inflammatory condition characterized by joint pain and stiffness. The 92-year-old shared the story of how he managed to walk again with The Guardian.
Plummer said that at the time, he felt “trapped” and struggled to get around. He then recalled his long-held passion for cycling and decided to give it another try.
He began riding regularly and gradually rebuilt his leg muscles. As a result, he was able to give up the wheelchair and move about independently. However, walking remains difficult for him; he cannot keep pace with his wife and friends when on foot.
On his bicycle, however, Plummer covers thousands of kilometers a year. He says he feels so energetic now that he is amazed by his own condition.
“I hope to meet the last day of my life on a bicycle,” the pensioner declared.
