Volkswagen Group has announced a major service campaign affecting more than 2.1 million vehicles worldwide. The move was prompted by a potential defect in a steering mechanism fastener, which, in the worst-case scenario, could impair the steering system’s operation. This was reported by the German automotive organization ADAC.
The issue concerns a threaded connection within the steering mechanism; under certain conditions—including corrosion—the fastener could loosen or fail. In a worst-case scenario, this could lead to compromised handling or a total loss of steering control, thereby increasing the risk of an accident.
As part of the campaign, owners of Volkswagen Golf, Golf Variant, Tiguan, Touran, and Caddy models produced between September 2013 and July 2024, as well as Audi Q3 models produced between October 2017 and May 2024, will be asked to bring their vehicles to service centers.
The service procedure involves inspecting the fastener assembly and replacing the potentially problematic bolt with a more corrosion-resistant one. This work is performed free of charge for vehicle owners. The company emphasized that, to date, there have been no reports of accidents or injuries linked to this defect.
