A man fishing from a kayak in California saw his outing go awry after hooking a shortfin mako shark. His attempt to release the fish resulted in it biting him twice and knocking him out of his boat, the L.A. Times reported.
The man was fishing two miles off the coast of Malibu on the morning of October 4 when he hooked the predator.
“The shark bit him, and he let it go. Then it came back, knocked him out of the boat, attacked again, and bit him on the leg,” said lifeguard Alex Buford.
A nearby fishing boat brought the injured man to shore, and lifeguards subsequently transported him to a local hospital. His condition is currently unknown.
A beach café manager reported that the man had bite marks on his lower leg and above his knee.
Mako sharks are considered dangerous to humans due to their speed, strength, and size. They inhabit the waters off the Malibu coast.
