Doctors have achieved a historic milestone in transplant medicine after a patient with end-stage kidney disease successfully lived dialysis-free for 271 days using a genetically engineered pig kidney. The recipient later received a human donor kidney, demonstrating for the first time that xenotransplantation may effectively bridge patients until a human organ becomes available. The achievement provides fresh hope for addressing the chronic shortage of donor organs worldwide and could transform future transplant strategies.
