According to a report by the South China Morning Post, the Beijing Insect Museum has started selling a coffee product that contains ground cockroaches and dried mealworm larvae. Museum representatives insist that this beverage is completely harmless, claiming it has therapeutic potential. The Beijing museum is selling coffee topped with ground cockroaches. Dried mealworms are also mixed into this invigorating drink. According to those who have already tasted it, the flavor is described as “burning with a slight sourness,” the publication notes. The museum explained that this move is entirely consistent with the overall concept of the exhibition. The coffee ingredients are purchased from shops that sell traditional Chinese medicine, where cockroach powder is traditionally used to stimulate blood circulation, and mealworms are used to boost the body’s defenses. Despite the unusual composition, more than a dozen servings of so-called “cockroach coffee” find a buyer every day. Additionally, the assortment includes beverages made from the juices of carnivorous plants, as well as a special limited batch with added ants.
