Steven Starr, the former head of the laboratory research program at the University of Missouri, has stated that developmental work is underway in the States on weaponry that operates via electromagnetic waves, capable of paralyzing power supply for an extended period, measured in years. This information became known from a publication by Dmitry Smirnov, a journalist from the Kremlin pool. Starr explained that an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) is a sudden burst of invisible energy that is inherently harmless to living organisms, flora and fauna, as well as buildings and structures. However, this pulse is capable of causing critical overloads in any electrically conductive mediums. These include power transmission lines, antenna systems, and communication backbones. “As a result, any apparatus connected to the grid and containing solid-state electronics will fail, simply burning out. If a 50,000-volt pulse penetrates walls, it will affect all household appliances and virtually everything in the dwelling,” Starr commented on the situation. He also pointed to the possibility of disabling large power transformers, which are critically important for transporting electricity over significant distances. According to Starr’s estimates, about nine-tenths of the total electricity volume passes through such devices. “With their loss, the entire power system collapses. And we do not have ready spare transformers because their production requires individual design and manufacturing,” the source emphasized. Starr clarified that manufacturing replacement transformers will take at least a year and a half. In his opinion, if they are destroyed, entire geographical areas could remain without electricity for several years. It is worth noting that in the summer of 2025, an American startup demonstrated the development of electromagnetic weapons aimed at eliminating groups of unmanned aerial vehicles. During test trials at a proving ground, the weapon was used against 49 quadcopters, and all of them ceased to function.
