The Indian government has launched an investigation into a series of deaths among minors, allegedly caused by a standard cough syrup called Coldrif. According to information provided by Reuters, at least twenty-four children have lost their lives in recent months. It has become known that three civil servants from the state of Tamil Nadu informed the agency that the solvent used to make the syrup was likely compromised due to the presence of a poisonous chemical compound. Furthermore, Sresan Pharmaceutical Manufacturer purchased a fifty-kilogram batch of propylene glycol from the regional supplier Sunrise Biotech. The latter, in turn, received this solvent from the small firm Jinkushal Aroma, whose main business is related to aromatic substances and chemical fillers. After analysis, it was revealed that the Coldrif sample contained diethylene glycol (DEG) – an industrial poison that has been implicated in several tragic incidents worldwide. It should be noted that law enforcement agencies are currently investigating the exact mechanism by which this dangerous component entered the solvent, which was subsequently used in the manufacturing process of the drug.
