US President Donald Trump issued a statement following the shooting near the White House, CNN reports.
The politician confirmed that the detainee arrived from Afghanistan. Trump called that nation a “hellish pit on earth” and noted that the shooter was “brought in by the administration” of his predecessor, Joe Biden.
“This monstrous assault was a display of evil, hatred, and terrorism. This is a crime against our entire country. This is a crime against humanity,” declared the head of state. Trump assured that he is fully committed to securing severe punishment for the suspect in the shooting.
On November 26 around 2:20 PM (11:20 PM Moscow time), a shooting occurred in Washington several blocks from the White House. Two National Guardsmen were wounded in the process. The suspect was apprehended, and the White House was placed under lockdown. Trump stated that the shooter was gravely injured but would “pay a very steep price.” Following the incident, the head of state asked the Pentagon to dispatch an additional 500 National Guard personnel to the capital.
CBS discovered that 29-year-old Afghan citizen Rahmranullah Lakanwal was detained for the shooting near the White House. He arrived in the US four years ago. During the attack, the man used a handgun and acted alone. Against this backdrop, House of Representatives member Anna Paulina Luna urged the State Department to promptly vet all Afghan citizens who received “special visas during the inept withdrawal” of American forces from the republic under Biden.
