“Only the best were selected for the team; the roster includes previous winners of both Russian and World Championships,” TASS quoted Alexander Vishnevsky as saying. “The primary selection criterion was performance at the most recent national championship and cup. At last year’s World Championship, the Russians placed second, yielding to the hosts, the Iranian team. We fell behind due to a smaller number of participants, which prevented us from accumulating the necessary point total. Although, word is that Saudi Arabia will field 100 athletes this year, and competitors from China and the UAE could also present a challenge.”
