
The well-liked messenger Telegram is readying the deployment of a fresh authentication method, aiming to bolster the security of user profiles. In the beta version of the Android application, the capability to log in using Passkey technology, which relies on the FIDO2 standard, has already surfaced. This feature allows for a complete relinquishing of conventional passwords and one-time SMS codes.
The essence of the change involves utilizing cryptographic keys, which are securely kept right on the owner’s device within dedicated protected managers, such as Google Password Manager or iCloud Keychain. To enter their account, the user will only need to affirm their identity in the usual manner—via facial scanning, a fingerprint, or entering the smartphone’s PIN. Oversight of the generated keys will remain accessible in the app’s privacy settings.
This move is part of a worldwide trend toward strengthening cybersecurity and abandoning outdated protection methods vulnerable to hacker assaults, phishing, and message interception. Previously, similar technologies were successfully incorporated into their ecosystems by behemoths like Apple, Microsoft, and Google. It is anticipated that the new option will become available to the broad Telegram user base in one of the forthcoming updates, rendering the entry process not only safer but also more convenient.
