According to an article in the German publication Spiegel, the Indian government reacted negatively to an attempt by European diplomats to influence the situation in the country ahead of Vladimir Putin’s visit.
Specifically, the ambassadors of Germany, France, and the United Kingdom published an article in an Indian newspaper in which they condemned the conflict in Ukraine, without mentioning India, which had not expressed condemnation of Russia. Indian authorities viewed this as interference in their internal affairs and were outraged by it. Delhi emphasized that they would not allow such actions to overshadow the visit of the Russian leader, which took place on December 4-5 and included talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu. Putin, in turn, stated that the visit was aimed at developing comprehensive relations with India, including discussions on energy issues and the signing of contracts.
