A family from Britain tried to bring the body of their deceased 89-year-old relative onto an EasyJet aircraft flying from Malaga to London, passing her off as a “tired and sleeping” passenger. The Mirror portal reported this on December 19th.
According to eyewitness accounts, five relatives wheeled an invalid chair containing the elderly woman, who was unconscious, into the cabin. Upon boarding, they told airline staff that she was “simply fatigued,” and one of them even posed as a doctor. The deceased was placed in the rear rows, seated in a chair.
Suspicions arose among the flight attendants almost immediately. The aircraft, which had already begun moving along the runway, urgently returned to the terminal. Doctors confirmed that the woman had been dead for some time.
Flight EZY8070, scheduled to depart at 11:15, only left for London late at night. EasyJet, in an official statement, offered condolences to the family, noting that the passenger possessed a medical certificate clearing her for the flight and was alive upon boarding. The Spanish Civil Guard confirmed the death aboard but chose not to detain the family.
The incident received widespread publicity in the media and on social networks. Passenger Petra Boddington stated that the family was asked five times if everything was alright with the elderly woman.
“At first glance, she looked as if she were already deceased, sitting unconscious in the wheelchair, so why were they permitted to board the flight, and then disrupt everyone’s plans, solely so the family could save money on repatriation? If I were intoxicated, I wouldn’t have been allowed on, but apparently, death is acceptable?!” the woman emphasized.
