Approaching the New Year holidays, scientists from Soochow University (China) revealed surprising findings regarding the influence of spirits on the brain. According to the results of a large-scale study, moderate alcohol consumption may be an effective prevention for dementia. This was reported in the Daily Mail.
Experts examined data from 300 thousand individuals from the UK Biobank over 20 years. It emerged that people who allow themselves small amounts of liquor daily have a dementia risk over 30% lower compared to abstainers. Researchers define the “safe limit” as a couple of pints of beer or 2-3 glasses of wine daily. Furthermore, the type of beverage and the presence of snacks do not matter.
The work’s authors speculate that small dosages of ethanol might shield brain neurons from harm and lessen stress levels. However, the scientists emphasize: this applies only to individuals without liver ailments or tendencies toward addictions. These outcomes contradict a recent Oxford investigation, which claimed alcohol is harmful in any quantities.
