The former mayor of the Chinese city of Guangzhou, Zhang Qi, has been sentenced to death for graft, embezzlement, and abuse of official power. The basis for the severe judgment included, in particular, evidence of fabulous enrichment: during the inquiry, 13.5 tons of gold and 23 tons of cash amounting to 286 billion yuan were confiscated from him. This is reported by the Telegram channel “Yuan da Marya.”
The investigation, which lasted for six years, showed that the official’s illicit schemes were not limited to cash and gold. According to law enforcement sources, Zhang Qi accepted bribes for contracts and land deals, and with the acquired funds, he purchased luxury residences (including abroad) and expensive vehicles.
