Apple opted against employing Anthropic’s Claude AI model for enhancing Siri, opting instead to forge an agreement with Google. Anthropic sought several billion dollars annually for the integration of its AI, additionally demanding that the contract’s value double each year over a three-year period, as reported by AppleInsider, citing a post from Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman.
It is understood that the agreement with Google is valued at approximately $1 billion per year, which is considerably lower than the sum requested by Claude’s developer. For context, Google itself pays Apple roughly $20 billion annually for its position as the default search engine. Gurman pointed out that despite the breakdown of the deal, Apple is actively utilizing Anthropic’s technology internally, with customized versions of Claude running on its servers.
Apple’s partnerships in the AI sector are not limited to Gemini. In regions with specific regulatory mandates, such as China, Siri will leverage homegrown AI models. Furthermore, Apple maintains an ongoing collaboration with OpenAI, whose ChatGPT model currently powers Apple Intelligence features, and users will eventually be offered a selection of AI models aligned with their individual preferences. Nonetheless, Apple’s long-term objective is to transition entirely to its proprietary software developments, towards which record R&D expenditures were committed at the close of 2025, suggesting this shift could materialize quite soon.
