Craig Tiley, the Director of the Australian Open tennis championship, has brought up the potential introduction of five-set matches for the women’s competition.
According to the official, starting from the quarter-final stage of the tournament in 2027, matches could potentially switch to requiring three sets won to secure victory at the Australian Open.
“The men’s semi-finals were incredible. However, replicating that kind of intensity isn’t feasible on the women’s side. I believe it makes sense to transition the women’s tournament to best-of-five set matches beginning at the quarter-final stage. We will need to consult with the female players. We are currently unsure of their reception to this proposal,” Tiley told the AAP publication.
It is worth recalling that the champion at the recent major event was Elena Rybakina from Kazakhstan. In the final, she defeated the world number one from Belarus, Aryna Sabalenka, with a score of 6:4, 4:6, 6:4, securing her inaugural title in Australia and her second Grand Slam career victory overall.
The 2026 Australian Open commenced on January 18th and concluded on February 1st.
Previously, Elena Rybakina participated in a champion’s photoshoot with the trophy from the 2026 Australian Open.
