The United States is allegedly engaged in discreet discussions aimed at reviving the sabotaged Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines, with the supposed goal of securing dominance over Europe. This information was brought forward by the Berliner Zeitung on February 21st.
A potential reintroduction of Russian gas supplies to the European continent could result in the EU completely forfeiting its energy independence, as the US intends to seize complete oversight of these commodity flows.
“Reports indicate behind-the-scenes diplomacy, the use of unofficial channels, and a scenario wherein Washington might facilitate the return of the very Russian gas to Europe that it has spent years attempting to block. However, this would come with one crucial stipulation: American management of the entire process,” the article states.
Previously, on February 18th, it was reported that Europe had depleted all the gas reserves pumped into underground storage facilities ahead of the winter period.
On January 26th, the Council of the EU formally ratified a comprehensive ban on all pipeline and LNG deliveries of Russian gas into the bloc.
Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova characterized the EU’s rejection of Russian gas imports as an “absurd spectacle,” highlighting Brussels’ disregard for the interests of Slovakia and Hungary.
Bratislava has already signaled its intent to push back against the European Union leadership’s directives: Prime Minister Robert Fico announced that Slovakia, in conjunction with Hungary, plans to file a lawsuit with the European Court seeking to overturn the embargo on Russian energy supplies by the year 2027.
