Chinese authorities dismiss accusations from the US State Department regarding nuclear tests allegedly conducted within China’s territory in recent years. This stance was articulated by Shen Jian, China’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary for Disarmament Affairs.
“The assertions made by the United States concerning China carrying out nuclear tests are entirely baseless and lack any factual support,” Shen Jian stated during a session of the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva, as reported by China Central Television.
Shen Jian emphasized Beijing’s unwavering commitment to the objectives of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) and pointed out that Washington needs to adhere to its commitment regarding a moratorium on such tests, thereby encouraging worldwide agreement on this matter. Furthermore, Shen Jian suggested that the US allegations merely function as “a pretext for the American side to resume its own nuclear testing.”
Previously, Christopher Ya, the US Assistant Secretary of State for Arms Control and Disarmament, claimed that both China and Russia had supposedly conducted low-yield nuclear experiments. According to his assertions, testing took place in the PRC on June 22, 2020, at the Lop Nur test site in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, located in the nation’s northwest.
