The 30-year-old Norwegian forward for Madrid’s Atlético, Alexander Sørloth, has etched his name in the club’s history, becoming only the second player ever to net a hat-trick in a UEFA Champions League fixture.
This remarkable achievement took place during the second leg of the playoff round against Belgium’s Club Brugge. The match was held at the Cívitas Metropolitano stadium in Madrid and concluded with a commanding 4-1 victory for the Rojiblancos.
It’s worth highlighting that prior to Sørloth’s feat, the only other Atlético player to score three goals in a single match was the Croatian striker Mario Mandžukić. That instance occurred in November 2014 during a game against Greece’s Olympiacos, which Atlético won 4-0.
The initial encounter between these two sides took place last Wednesday, February 18th, and ended in a high-scoring draw, with the score at 3-3.
Consequently, Diego Simeone’s squad has advanced to the Round of 16 in the competition, where they will face either the English clubs Liverpool or Tottenham Hotspur.
Separately, news emerged that the 34-year-old French forward for Atlético Madrid, Antoine Griezmann, might complete a transfer to Orlando City in the MLS in the coming days.
