
American researchers, through a recent experiment, successfully demonstrated that extending the overnight fasting window, taking into account individual sleep patterns, significantly enhances markers of cardiovascular and metabolic health, even without reducing overall dietary calorie intake. The findings of this study were published in the journal Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology (ATVB).
Thirty-nine participants, aged between 36 and 75, who were either overweight or obese, were recruited for this investigation. This demographic represents a high-risk cohort for cardiometabolic diseases. The entire experimental period spanned 7.5 weeks.
The subjects were then divided into two distinct cohorts. The control group maintained their usual eating habits, resulting in an overnight period without food lasting 11 to 13 hours. In contrast, the intervention group fasted for an extended period, ranging from 13 to 16 hours, with their final meal concluded three hours before retiring for the night. Crucially, the caloric content of the diet remained unchanged for both groups. Furthermore, participants in both arms of the study were instructed to dim the lights three hours before bedtime to bolster circadian signaling.
The study authors articulate the core mechanism: when the fasting interval is synchronized with the body’s natural cycles of wakefulness and sleep, it improves the coherence between cardiac function, metabolic processes, and sleep regulation, thereby offering comprehensive protection for cardiovascular well-being.
The specialists emphasize that maintaining an optimal dietary composition and volume is important, but equal attention must be paid to the timing of food consumption relative to sleep periods.
The trial revealed that individuals who ceased eating three hours before bed and consequently elongated their nocturnal fasting interval exhibited improvements in nocturnal blood pressure and heart rate readings, alongside superior daytime glucose levels.
During sleep, arterial pressure decreased by an average of 3.5%, and heart rate dropped by 5%. A more pronounced daily rhythm—characterized by heightened daytime heart activity followed by nocturnal deceleration—is considered an indicator of a well-tuned cardiovascular system. Under these same conditions, the pancreas operates optimally, thereby mitigating risks of dysfunction.
