Google has initiated a worldwide rollout of the “Past Chats” feature for users of the free tier of the Gemini application. The neural network is now capable of examining the history of prior conversations and incorporating that context when formulating new responses. Previously, this capability was restricted solely to subscribers of Google AI’s paid service.

As detailed by 9to5Google, the system independently learns based on the user’s preferences, thereby generating more tailored replies without requiring the user to manually refresh the chatbot’s memory regarding the specifics of earlier exchanges. Should a user have previously engaged in dialogue concerning a particular subject, they can resume that line of conversation in a new chat—the algorithm will automatically retrieve all relevant data. If desired, one can inquire of the AI whether it utilized information from prior sessions when generating its current response.
The update is rolling out globally, though implementation will experience a delay for residents within the EU. Management of this functionality is accessible via the application’s settings menu under the “Personal Context” section, where a toggle switch labeled “Your past chats with Gemini” is located. Within the same menu, further down, a section with instructions for the neural network is displayed, intended to offer additional refinement to the AI assistant’s working style and output format.
In addition to “Past Chats,” Google plans to grant free users access to the “Personal Intelligence” function, which will possess the ability to interface with Gmail, Google Photos, and other company applications for even more profound personalization of its outputs.
