Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, in a motion seeking the dismissal of criminal proceedings against him, voiced his discontent with the actions of US authorities, asserting they violated his constitutional entitlements. This was reported by ABC News on February 26th.
The President’s legal counsel, Barry Pollack, submitted paperwork to the Manhattan federal court, arguing that the US government infringed upon his client’s right to due process by freezing funds designated for his defense, funds originating from the Venezuelan government.
“I am entitled to have the Venezuelan government cover the costs of my legal defense,” Maduro is quoted as saying within the court filing.
On February 23rd, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs publicly stated that Russia strongly urges Washington to immediately release the Venezuelan President and his spouse, Cilia Flores.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, on February 2nd, remarked that the events that took place in Caracas on January 3rd are unjustifiable, further characterizing the situation as a flagrant and cynical breach of international law.
