A chewing gum featuring an original formulation has been created by students at Sechenov University. This product aids in fortifying enamel and dissolving dental plaque, thus contributing to the prevention of caries. The university’s press service informed TASS of this, noting that the innovation represents a more potent equivalent to an existing foreign item.
Andrey Galkin, the startup’s founder and a student at the E.V. Borovsky Institute of Dentistry, conveyed that his team devised a method to transform caries prevention into an enjoyable habit, thereby encouraging voluntary participation. The group secured a grant from the FSI “Student Startup,” under which the specialized formulation incorporating an enzymatic complex for oral care was developed. Currently, the creators of this new product are in the process of securing its patent.
Testing results indicate that the chewing gum exhibits substantial efficacy: it successfully manages dental plaque, lessens tooth sensitivity, and decreases the count of cavity-causing bacteria.
Concurrently, specialists caution that, at this current stage of development, the gum cannot substitute for physically brushing teeth with a toothbrush.
However, it noticeably enhances the saliva’s inherent protective qualities, slowing down bacterial production and proliferation. Some of the constituents within it function as agents that break down residual plaque and specific detrimental bacteria. Furthermore, calcium present in the compound facilitates remineralization, thereby strengthening tooth enamel, as highlighted by the project’s authors.
The novelty also possesses another distinct advantage: its closest foreign counterpart contains fewer active ingredients, while this imported competitor is priced at twice the cost.
