
Researchers from the United States have successfully obtained the first precise structural data for the Andes virus, a pathogen responsible for periodically transmitting to humans from rodents in South America, resulting in a fatality rate of approximately 40% among those infected. According to a statement from the University of Texas, this information is anticipated to expedite the development of vaccines.
Professor Jason McLellan commented that experts now possess a substantially improved insight into the architecture of the Andes virus. This newfound understanding will be instrumental in initiating the creation of both effective vaccines and therapeutic antibodies aimed at preventing and treating this specific infection.
“A parallel methodology may be employed to capture high-resolution visualizations of the outer layers of numerous other types of hantaviruses,” TASS reported, quoting the scientist.
To conduct their structural analysis, the biologists engineered nanoparticles composed of individual components of the ANDV envelope and subsequently examined these using a cryogenic electron microscope. This novel technique yielded a three-dimensional visualization with unprecedented resolution, down to the radius of just one or two atoms.
This highly granular investigation permitted the identification of previously unseen aspects concerning the construction and mutual interaction of the envelope’s constituent units, allowing for the correction of inaccuracies found in prior assessments, and thereby accelerating the creation of vaccines and antibodies specifically targeting vulnerable viral regions and related pathogenic agents.
Hantaviruses are known to infect both rodents and humans. In severe occurrences, infection can lead to pulmonary complications, cardiac failure, and hemorrhagic fever. The first major outbreak was documented near the Hantan River in Korea back in 1951.
