During his address at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media, and Telecom conference, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang delivered a rather polarizing remark. He stated that, for Nvidia, “The fact that everything is currently constrained is just wonderful for us.”
Huang’s comments surfaced while discussing the expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure. Bottlenecks identified included limitations in memory chip supply, silicon wafers, chip packaging, power constraints, and data center capacities. This indicated the discussion was broader than just the gaming products the company was once chiefly associated with.
According to Huang, these limitations compel customers to opt for the highest-performing solutions. He posited that this places Nvidia in the most advantageous position because the company can guarantee substantial delivery volumes across the entire supply chain. He emphasized that Nvidia has secured the necessary supplies of memory, wafers, CoWoS packaging, systems, cabling, and other essential elements for deploying AI infrastructure at scale.
“You know what? Go build a new DRAM factory, because I’m going to use it. You can be absolutely certain of that. I think the fact that everything is constrained right now is just fantastic for us,” Huang declared.
This statement might strike many as highly debatable, even provocative, given that shortages impact not only the Data Center sector but the entire computer hardware market, including gaming. Nvidia previously conceded that supply restraints would impede the gaming hardware market. Memory manufacturers and graphics card partners echo this sentiment, citing limited availability of crucial components. However, this situation seemingly causes Huang no concern whatsoever.
It’s clear that gamers do not share the Nvidia chief’s enthusiasm. Yet, major cloud corporations, AI firms, and investors are undoubtedly pleased.
“I love constraints. I absolutely love constraints. The reason is, in a constrained world, you have no option but to choose the best. You cannot waste your resources on random selection. If data centers, land, power, and deployment space are limited, you won’t put just anything there. You will deploy something that you know for sure will deliver the necessary performance and allow you to build an entire factory the moment you receive capacity. We are the only company globally that can walk into your organization and help you build an entire AI factory. So, if anyone here needs an AI factory, I am happy to assist,” Huang elaborated.
As reported by VideoCardz, Nvidia’s financial muscle enables it to reserve critical capacities from chip producers, effectively locking out smaller rivals. Nevertheless, for the remainder of the market, this serves as another potent reminder that the relentless growth of the AI sector continues to consume resources that might otherwise have been distributed across a wider array of market segments, including consumer and gaming.
