Google has commenced the deployment of Gemini-powered AI agents for over 3 million civilian and military personnel within the U.S. Department of Defense, according to a report by Engadget.
Initially, these AI tools will be utilized across the department’s non-classified networks. Negotiations are already underway concerning the potential to extend access to systems that handle classified information.
The project involves employing eight pre-developed AI agents. These are designed to automate routine assignments, such as compiling meeting summaries, generating budgetary paperwork, and assessing proposed courses of action against national security protocols.
Google’s Vice President, Jim Kelly, stated that Pentagon staff will have the capability to develop their own bespoke AI agents simply by providing natural language text prompts.
The U.S. Department of Defense reports that approximately 1.2 million employees have been utilizing the Gemini-based chatbot, accessible via the department’s internal portal, since last December. During this timeframe, they submitted close to 40 million distinct queries and uploaded more than 4 million documents.
Concurrently, the pace of staff training trails the rate at which the technology is being introduced. Since December, only about 26,000 personnel have completed the courses on working with AI, even though future training sessions are already fully booked.
