
Scientists from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis have uncovered a novel functional pathway within brown fat, which facilitates the body’s ability to expend calories and maintain thermal regulation. These findings were formally presented in the journal Nature.
While white fat functions primarily to store energy reserves, brown fat is specialized in converting energy into heat. The research team determined that this thermogenic function is moderated not solely by mitochondria, but also by peroxisomes—intracellular organelles primarily involved in lipid metabolism. A protein specifically called ACOX2 proves central to this newly identified mechanism; its concentration within brown adipose tissue rises in response to cold exposure.
It was further noted by the researchers that the fatty acids responsible for initiating this thermogenic cascade are present in dairy items and human breast milk, in addition to being synthesized by the resident bacteria within the gut.
