
Archaeologists have achieved a truly remarkable, record-breaking discovery.
Paleontologists unearthed an extraordinary fossil in the Thuringian Forest (Germany): the oldest known cloacal impression to science. Estimated to be roughly 295 million years old, this specimen predates the former record holder by a factor of two, according to a ScienceAlert report.
The fossil, designated Cabarzichnus pulchrus, captures the imprint left by a diminutive reptile, measuring just 9 cm in length, as it squatted on soft sediment. The specimen’s exceptional preservation allowed researchers to discern not only the shape of the cloacal opening at the tail base but also the intricate details of the ventral scales.
Scholars observe that the cloacal structure of this ancient creature bears a closer resemblance to the anatomy found in extant turtles, lizards, and snakes, rather than that of crocodiles or dinosaurs. This finding substantiates the theory that this organ evolved within the earliest amniotes—the common ancestors of modern reptiles, birds, and mammals.
This discovery is immensely significant because soft tissues rarely survive across the paleontological record, offering rare insight into the anatomical specifics of long-extinct creatures.
