Waking up to find saliva on your pillow suggests it’s worth considering whether your health is entirely sound. This occurrence could stem from gastroesophageal reflux disease, allergies, or even amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Doctor Landon D’Quika from the Cleveland Clinic shared insights on the causes of this concerning symptom, as reported by the publication Infobae.
According to the doctor, the most frequent origin of this issue lies in the chosen sleeping position. Positions such as sleeping on your side or stomach allow saliva to more easily escape the mouth simply due to the pull of gravity. Nevertheless, this symptom can occasionally indicate underlying health issues.
For instance, increased saliva production is associated with various infections and allergies. These conditions spur inflammation in tissues and impede nasal breathing, causing an individual to breathe through their mouth. Respiratory tract infections, such as mononucleosis, also contribute to heightened salivation.
The same pattern can be an indicator of gastroesophageal reflux disease. This condition involves stomach acid irritating the esophagus, prompting the body to generate more saliva as a means to partially neutralize the acid. Excess fluid intake is yet another potential culprit for this bothersome symptom; it can simply leak out during sleep.
Furthermore, this sign may be linked to neurological disorders. Conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, cerebral palsy, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis impair the swallowing mechanism, resulting in drooling.
Finally, dental issues are also a possibility. Grinding teeth during sleep (bruxism) or bite irregularities prevent the mouth from closing completely, which makes it easier for saliva to escape. Another contributor is a side effect from certain medications, including various antibiotics.
The physician emphasizes that most instances of nighttime drooling pose no serious threat and are transient. However, if it appears suddenly and then becomes a regular occurrence, or if it is accompanied by other symptoms, consulting a medical professional is advisable.
