
Significant physical enhancements in older adults experiencing age-related frailty can be achieved through stem cell injections. This conclusion was reached by researchers in the USA, overseen by Florida Atlantic University. The findings from this clinical trial were published in the journal Cell Stem Cell.
The study involved 148 participants, aged between 70 and 85, who had been diagnosed with what is commonly known as senescence-related frailty. This condition results in diminished muscle strength and stamina, elevating the likelihood of falls, disability, and hospitalization. Participants received an injection of laromestrocel, a preparation derived from the bone marrow stem cells of younger donors.
Roughly nine months following the injection, around one-third of the subjects displayed a clear upturn in their condition, with markers of age-related frailty vanishing. Furthermore, those who received higher dosages of the therapy performed better on walking speed assessments. On average, they covered 63 meters more distance in six minutes compared to individuals in the placebo group.
This novel treatment strategy aims to replenish the body’s stock of stem cells, which naturally decline as a person ages. This replenishment has the potential to reduce chronic inflammation, boost vascular function, and stimulate tissue repair processes.
The research team believes these techniques show great promise as a fresh strategy for combating the general decline associated with aging in the body. However, further, larger-scale clinical trials are necessary to definitively confirm the efficacy and safety of this new methodology.
