Lockheed Martin’s software upgrade initiative for the F-35 fighter jets has encountered significant hurdles, with an unclassified internal document from the U.S. Department of Defense’s testing division reportedly stating that the project has “reached a standstill,” as reported by Bloomberg.
Even as the F-35s are actively engaged in combat missions over Iran, the system has failed to incorporate any new combat capabilities as of 2025. The crucial software iteration, known as TR-3, which was crucial for boosting processing power by a factor of 37 and memory capacity by 20 times, was “largely unusable for the better part of the last year.”
The internal document highlights that the program is falling short of the Pentagon’s expectations. It is consistently missing deadlines and is failing to produce a stable, fully functional system ready for rigorous testing before deployment onto the aircraft.
