Apple is reportedly contemplating a substantial shift in its mobile photography strategy for the forthcoming iPhone 18 Pro models. Rumor suggests the company is examining the integration of pro-level functionalities directly into the native camera application, aligning it with the increasing sophistication of the hardware itself.
This focus aligns with confirmed past interest, as Apple engaged in acquisition discussions last year with Lux Optics, the creator behind the well-regarded Halide application. Halide stands out for its sophisticated manual camera controls, affording users greater shooting precision compared to the default settings provided within iOS.
Although the acquisition ultimately did not materialize, reports indicate Apple’s primary motivation was to secure the studio’s intellectual property to expedite the evolution of its in-house camera technology. Furthermore, one of Lux Optics’ co-founders, designer Sebastiaan de With, subsequently joined Apple, potentially boosting the impact of professional-grade features on upcoming iOS iterations.
The expectation is that the iPhone 18 Pro camera will start mirroring the capabilities of dedicated professional gear, necessitating that the default application incorporate more advanced adjustment options. Currently, the standard iPhone camera favors simplicity; however, this landscape is expected to evolve, with initial indicators of these enhanced features possibly arriving alongside the launch of iOS 27.
