French firm Pernod Ricard, a major player in the alcohol sector, is exploring the potential acquisition of Brown-Forman, the American producer behind Jack Daniel’s whiskey and Woodford Reserve bourbon, according to Bloomberg, citing internal sources.
Sources indicate that Pernod Ricard has already held initial discussions with Brown-Forman. While talks regarding the specifics are ongoing, the certainty of reaching a final agreement remains questionable at this stage, the informants mention. Representatives for both corporations declined to offer comments on Bloomberg’s report.
Established in 1975, the Pernod Ricard group produces and markets various spirits, including Absolut vodka, Havana Club rum, Jameson, Ballantine’s, and Chivas Regal whiskies, Martell cognac, and Olmeca tequila. The company’s portfolio is distributed across 160 nations.
Brown-Forman stands as one of the most venerable American enterprises in the beverage industry, primarily recognized for its portfolio of premium whiskey labels. It has been active in the market since 1870. In addition to Jack Daniel’s and Woodford Reserve, the company also manufactures Herradura tequila and Finlandia vodka.
Bloomberg further observes that the negotiations between the French and American beverage giants are occurring amidst global market strains. These pressures are partly attributed to retaliatory tariffs imposed by China on French cognac and brandy originating from Europe. This specific action by Beijing was a direct response to tariffs levied by Europe on Chinese-manufactured electric vehicles.
