The Guardian has reported that the first euthanasia procedure was carried out in Spain on a young woman battling depression.
Noelia Castillo Ramos, aged 25 and hailing from Catalonia, had endured a gang rape and subsequently made suicide attempts. One of these attempts resulted in severe injuries, leaving her paralyzed from the waist down.
The young woman pursued the procedure for nearly two years, ultimately gaining backing from both Spain’s Constitutional Court and the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). In the hours preceding the procedure, scores of individuals showing support for Ramos congregated near the hospital in Barcelona.
Prior to this, Spain’s Constitutional Court had dismissed a legal challenge brought by the 25-year-old woman’s father, who sought to prevent the euthanasia that had been authorized for his daughter.
Spain’s euthanasia law came into effect in 2021. As of 2024, 426 individuals have utilized it, notwithstanding years of opposition from conservative political factions and the Catholic Church.
