The state-owned enterprise Great British Energy – Nuclear (GBE-N) has secured an agreement with Rolls-Royce to erect the United Kingdom’s inaugural small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs). This undertaking is part of the broader national initiative aimed at advancing clean energy generation and bolstering the nation’s energy security, according to TASS reports.

The plan encompasses the construction of three power units, collectively projected to generate a minimum of 1.4 GW of electricity. Government projections suggest this output will be sufficient to power approximately 3 million contemporary residences for upwards of 60 years.
The funding for this venture has already been greenlit: in 2025, the government allocated £2.6 billion toward the endeavor. Furthermore, the UK’s National Wealth Fund will extend up to £599 million to Rolls-Royce to aid in the development and subsequent deployment of the project.
These SMRs are anticipated to be connected to the UK’s power grid sometime during the 2030s. Rolls-Royce had previously been successful in the tender process for developing the country’s first SMRs.
