The world’s most aged gorilla, a female named Fatou, marked her 69th birthday at the Berlin Zoo. The celebrated primate received a delightful present: a substantial bouquet composed of bamboo, alongside a hamper filled with her preferred treats, specifically fresh lettuce and an assortment of vegetables, according to reports from the Daily Mail.
Fatou has long since settled into a tranquil, retired existence. She resides in a separate dwelling, kept apart from the rest of the gorilla troop. Due to various health concerns, fruits with high sugar content have been entirely eliminated from her diet. Furthermore, as she has lost all her teeth, some of her meals are prepared and minced specifically for her consumption.
Despite her venerable years, Fatou occasionally ascends the rock formations, though this occurs far less frequently than during her younger days. Zoo staff are dedicated to ensuring her utmost comfort.
It’s worth noting that gorillas represent the largest and heaviest species among all apes. In their natural habitats, they face significant peril: deforestation, mineral extraction, and continued poaching pose serious threats to their survival.
