The management of the Washington Capitals is taking its time regarding contract negotiations with Alexander Ovechkin. Hockey Operations President Brian MacLellan and General Manager Chris Patrick have yet to convene with the 40-year-old captain to debrief on the season, as reported by journalist Tom Gulitti on the X social media platform.
The organization has afforded the Russian player a hiatus to rest, contemplate, and consult with his family before they commence discussions concerning his future.
Ovechkin’s current contract with Washington runs until the conclusion of the 2025/26 campaign. The hockey player himself jokingly mentioned previously that he seeks a two-year offer from the club. While Washington’s preferred scenario is to have a response before the draft, they indicated a willingness to wait for whatever duration is necessary. Furthermore, the fanbase has already made its voice heard: during the recent home game against Pittsburgh, fans chanted, urging Ovechkin to remain for another season.
