Discussions about Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe have been ongoing for quite some time. However, fans now have an answer to the central query: the reason the studio opted to bring the actor back, albeit in a completely transformed capacity.
Marvel head Kevin Feige has, for the first time, elaborated on why the “Iron Man” star will appear in “Avengers: Secret Wars” not as a hero, but as the primary antagonist, as reported by Entertainment Weekly.
According to the producer, the concept of bringing the actor back was debated for years. “For obvious reasons, he is intrinsically linked to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and we were certainly keen to discuss when and if he might return, and how,” Feige stated. Ultimately, the team embraced a daring maneuver, transforming the franchise’s most iconic figure into its main villain. The Marvel chief also clarified that the notion involving Doctor Doom originated roughly three and a half years ago.
“Avengers: Secret Wars” is set to be a pivotal installment for the MCU, integrating numerous factions—ranging from the original “Avengers” lineup to the “X-Men” and the “Fantastic Four.” The narrative will involve heroes from disparate realities confronting the menace of Doctor Doom, the role Downey will undertake. The film’s debut is scheduled for December 2026.

It’s worth recalling that initial murmurs regarding the actor’s comeback surfaced back in 2024 at Comic Con, where Marvel unveiled a shift in the franchise’s direction. At that time, confirmation was provided that Downey would feature in a new capacity, yet only now is the studio revealing the rationale driving this decision.
