A collective of American researchers, spearheaded by archaeologist Andrew Jones, has unveiled fresh findings from scanning the enigmatic Durupınar formation in eastern Turkey—famously known as the “Ararat Anomaly.” Ground-penetrating radar data revealed orderly, angular structures and void spaces beneath the earth’s surface, arranged across three distinct tiers.
The scientists acknowledge the possibility that this detected “layout” might align with the biblical description of Noah’s Ark’s internal configuration. Nevertheless, local authorities currently prohibit any excavation work, limiting enthusiasts strictly to non-invasive “seeing through” the mountain.
Ground Radar Detected Voids
For upwards of half a century, the hill in Eastern Anatolia known as Durupınar has captivated pilgrims, adventurers, and archaeologists alike. The mysterious feature, situated 30 kilometers south of Mount Ararat and somewhat resembling the silhouette of a colossal 165-meter-long vessel, first became visible in May 1948. That year, a severe earthquake followed by torrential rains eroded the surface soil, exposing contours that matched biblical measurements: 300 cubits long, 50 wide, and 30 high. Believers immediately wondered, “Could this be Noah’s Ark?”
Scientists also began to examine the curious object closely. A new surge of interest followed after geologists confirmed that this region experienced a catastrophic flood sometime between 3,500 and 5,000 years ago.
For researcher Andrew Jones, this served as a catalyst for action. Utilizing advanced equipment, his team journeyed to the base of Mount Ararat to “illuminate” the hill completely. Employing ground-penetrating radar, capable of imaging ground tens of meters deep, alongside infrared thermography, the research group compiled a three-dimensional map of the hill’s interior. The results were unexpected, even to the scientists themselves.
“We anticipated either finding solid bedrock or chaotic fissures. Instead, the radar showed a structured network. It’s a system of corridors converging on a large central chamber, which we are provisionally calling the atrium,” commented Andrew Jones on the discovery.
The GPR registered a central void approximately four meters in length. This central space is encircled by a network of side corridors or passages that traverse the entire structure of the hill.
But the most significant detail compelling enthusiasts to draw parallels with the Old Testament is the presence of three stacked tiers of voids, situated roughly six meters below the surface. The Book of Genesis contains a direct divine instruction to Noah stating that the Ark was to have three decks: “And make a space in the ark, and finish it with a covering inside and out. And this is the way you shall make it: three hundred cubits long, fifty cubits wide, and thirty cubits high. And make a roof in the ark and finish it with a cubit, and set the door of the ark in the side; you shall make it with lower, second, and third levels.”

Chemistry Aids Geology
In addition to the imagery acquired via GPR, the scientific team presented laboratory analysis results from soil samples taken precisely within the boundaries of the hill’s “ship-like” contour at Durupınar. It was discovered that the soil’s chemical makeup inside the anomaly drastically differs from the surrounding landscape. Eighty-eight samples were collected. The analysis indicated an abnormally high concentration of organic matter and potassium. The carbon content within the Durupınar formation was found to be three times higher than outside, and potassium levels were 38% greater.
In the researchers’ view, such a chemical signature could indicate the decomposition of a massive volume of biomass. It is plausible that these are the remnants of wood decay that has occurred here over millennia.
“Certainly, we don’t anticipate finding pristine timber or original partitions,” explains Andrew Jones. “Time has likely left us only the chemical ‘imprint’ of the wood within the soil. Plus, the boat shape itself, imprinted upon the mountain’s relief.”
The natural environment provides scientists with further material for contemplation. Researchers have noted a peculiar observation: grass growing inside the supposed “Ark” turns yellow and wilts significantly faster in the autumn compared to the vegetation outside its borders. This serves as circumstantial evidence that underlying the thin layer of turf might be constructed elements, foreign structures, or voids affecting soil moisture and temperature.
Furthermore, rock analysis revealed traces of marine deposits and microscopic fossils of sea organisms. Finding seashells at an altitude exceeding two kilometers above sea level once again confirms that this area was once submerged. The only remaining question is whether this occurred due to the slow uplift of tectonic plates or if these lands were inundated by a catastrophic deluge.
Curiously, the Durupınar formation attracted interest from sources beyond academics and pilgrims. According to some accounts, the US CIA monitored the object last century, studying the anomaly in aerial photographs.
The official scientific stance has remained resolute for many decades. Professional geologists maintain that this hill is a naturally occurring geological feature—a rock fold that coincidentally mimics the outline of a vessel. Such a formation is termed a “syncline.”
Skeptics also point out that the angular structures detected by the radar could be natural fractures in the basalt, and the high organic content might merely be the result of soil microorganisms thriving in the hill’s low-lying areas.
Andrew Jones remains undeterred and is prepared to pursue this to the end. However, a bureaucratic obstacle stands in the path of the enthusiasts: Turkish local authorities have imposed a ban on all earthworks and excavations in the vicinity. Scientists are authorized to employ only non-invasive investigative techniques.
Mount Ararat belonged to Russia in the 19th century, and in the early 20th century, Lenin transferred this territory to Turkey.

They are now preparing for a sequence of further tests. Engineers are designing a compact robotic platform equipped with a high-resolution camera, hoping that the ban imposed by Turkish officials will be lifted. The goal is to drill a narrow shaft down to the level of the detected cavities and deploy a probe. Only a video feed transmitted from the subterranean voids will be able to settle the decades-long dispute once and for all.
